This most recent body of work explores the re-wilding and re-balancing of self through encounter with an "other" within nature. Directed by my own personal challenges with health I began exploring local woodlands and nature reserves as a form of physical therapy and soon discovered it to be a form of emotional therapy just as much, if not more so. I noticed a particular soothing atmosphere in these environments that melted away my anxieties and stress. It was here that I began photographing and then painting the enigmatic and beautiful fungi that grew from decay and other plants around me. I hope to share some of this affective, magical and healing experience with the viewer, along with generating an interest and awareness of fungi's fascinating and crucial role in ecological matters.
With a specific focus on Fungi, my most recent body or work
researches how Wim Zweer’s theory of “unio mystica” (a sense of unity with nature) may be
implemented in the healing of trauma, while challenging human-centric ideas of species hierarchy.
My practice implements this mode of participation and encounter with fungal hidden underworlds
of local woodlands and forests through primal exploration, photography, and slow looking, when
recapturing the affective magic of these environments and enigmatic fungal growths through paint.
